• ‘Kirtan’ is a form of story telling , mostly popular in the state of Maharashtra and South India, in which there is a pleasant blending of story, m usic, drama and oratory. Basically, this is religion oriented. According to Hindu religion , there are nine ways of ‘ Bhakti’ the ways of worshipping God, and ‘K irtan’ is one of them. Performing and listening to it is considered to be a means of salvation. It is very useful form of communication popular amongst children and adults alike . In modern times, lifestories of great national heroes of the country, outstanding historical characters, social reformers and scientists have also been included in ‘Kirtan’ . It is also considered as one of the tools of informal education. There have been instituions in India which provide training in performing ‘K irtan’and also hold examinations.
